What We Have Been Doing

Tops had some time off this past week. It's been nice having him around, and doing family things. Monday, we went with my family ( Mom, Dad, 5 of my siblings, and my SIL Bethany) to a somewhat nearby Amish area. I brought my camera, but didn't get any pictures of the scenery, which doesn't matter anyway, because the photos won't load the morning. First we went to Lehman's Hardware, and no, we did not spend several hours looking at wood and nails. This place has all kinds of things- pottery, wood stoves, kitchen wares, lots of things for a non-electric life style. (And yes we do have electricity, I don't want you to think I'm sitting here peddling a bike to generate power for our computer) The store was recently overhauled and re-modeled, and we spent more time there than normal because its about 3 times the size of what it was.
After that, we went to a cheese factory ( that doesn't sound quite right) where you get to sample all the different kinds they make. Always a yummy stop. We had a picnic with our purchases, then walked around the Amish/Mennonite visitors center, where Tops was looking up some history on his ancestors, who were Anabaptist's and later Mennonites. Some driving around and then we trekked home. Not much in the fall color department. It was pretty green still.
Tuesday, we went up to visit my grandparents, who live about 15 minutes apart, and Wednesday we went down to visit Top's grandma. She pulled out some family history things and maps, and after we left, we were able to drive past his great great grandfathers (and g.g. uncles) farms, which are still standing, and in good shape. I found a picture here at home of his g.g.f.'s house, and it still looks very much the same, except for a bit of an addition. I would like to enlarge a color copy of it to hang in the living room.
The rest of the week has been staying at home, just venturing out to the grocery store and library (A "new" library too. With a drive up return box.)
I have a few photos to post once they load, so by Monday, I should return to my regularly scheduled sporadic posting.
Have a lovely weekend!

Neat to hear that your husband comes from Mennonite stock too. I come from that background as well. Such a neat history.

Ha, HA! I'm picturing you peddling away on that bike-- now that's good exercise! Glad you're back!

Sounds like you've had some delightful excursions! :)

It's interesting to hear about your husband's background, since I can relate a little. My parents both come from Church of the Brethren background (which is Anabaptist), and I went to a Mennonite high school and a Brethren in Christ college (both Anabaptist). Now we're attending a Mennonite church. There are so many good things about that heritage!

Does your husband play the "Mennonite game"? I was reminded of that "game" yesterday when I was at my out-of-state college reunion and was talking with the husband (whom I don't know well at all, since they just got married) of one of my former roommates. He comes from Mennonite background; and as it turns out, his cousin lives near me and is married to a guy that my family knew growing up, and we actually carpooled to school with them. Plus, Josiah played on a soccer team with the children of the cousin and the guy my family knows. So it's always a small world with Mennonites, it seems! :)

Mrs.H- I thought I remembered reading something about that by you! One of his early, early ancestors(at least we're pretty sure they are related due to the last name) was one of the last people to be martyred(sp?) for not changing their beliefs!

New Mom- It would be fantastic excersize, which I could use. We have an stationary bike in the garage, but it's being used as a spider apartment right now.

Davene- No he hasn't played that!
He's moved several times growing up, and I think his connection with the Mennonite church was severed several generations ago. His GGGF moved from Lancaster in the 1820's or 30's and left the church at that time (or so we've been told). We are probably distantly related to a good number of Amish/Mennonites still living there though.
