Yes, yes, I know there is no such thing, and no I haven't been drinking. But one day last March, while eating dinner, I happened to look up and see the grandaddy of all possums eating rotten apples under our tree. This thing was HUGE, and as they are a
nuisance, and can carry disease, and even though it was acting normal, rabies has been in the incline around this part of Ohio, Mr.B sent him to the big apple tree in the sky.
A few days later, Audrey was aiming her "
markelers"(magic markers) out the window and making shooting noises. When asked what she was doing she said "I'm
shootin' possums. Pink possums!" Here I will insert that she is borderline
obsessed with the color pink-such a girl!
Any way that is where the pink possums came from, which she sees frequently, along with "ugly mans". I have no story for that one.
Since we've been married, I have seen in our yard(in no particular order):
Deer- 2 weeks ago Audrey said there was a deer in our yard. Given the pink possum and ugly mans sightings, I didn't believe her 'til she said there were 2 of them. Looking out the window, I saw that there were indeed a doe and a fawn(still with spots- so cute!) eyeing the garden. There have been other deer
spotting's by more reliable sources too.
Fox- it was more of a blur running along the pond.
Coyote- another dinner time spotting, this time by Mr. B. we know they're around as we're often
serenaded at night, but you don't expect to see one trotting through at 6 in the evening. We were surprised at how big he was.
Muskrat- along the pond.
Baltimore Oriole- I saw a bright flash of orange while doing dishes one morning. I love their song!
Raccoons- under the apple tree.
Turkeys- passing through to go across the road.
Canadian Geese- or, as Mr. B. calls them Sky Carp. This is the first year they haven't stuck around, which is good, because they seemed to think my garden was just for them.
Blue Heron- he's a loner, and almost flew into the side of the garage once. A bit nearsighted perhaps?
Rabbits- and more rabbits and more rabbits. Mr. B. does his part to help keep the population in check.
Squirrels- they seem to like apples.
Snakes- we had one that would sun himself
allot in the bushes last year.
Opossums- see above story, plus we had one under the apple tree just a few minutes ago, which prompted this long and boring post.
Marsh Hawk, and other various birds of prey- I've seen them swoop down on the pond and grab fish,
that's really neat!
King Fisher- at least we think it was. It flew
along the pond at dusk and had the same shape as a King Fisher.
Red Headed Wood Pecker- hungry enough to eat bird seed last winter.
Ducks- Mallards, Wood ducks, and a few others I can't remember.
And I think
that's about it. If anyone is still reading, aside from my family, whats the most interesting critter you've seen in your yard?
