The Big Snow

Wasn't there a children's book by that name? Hmm, anyway our big snow story: I believe it was last Monday we were outside enjoying the warm up, with only a light jacket needed. Tuesday, I can't remember when exactly, the freezing rain started. As you can probably imagine, with all that heavy ice, the electricity went out. I actually woke up right as ours did at 3:10 AM Wednesday. I was able to rouse the Great Sleeping Giant, and he went to start the generator( we have a sump pump in the basement, for our well- if it fills up, the basement floods, so we have to keep the pump running). Our power did not come back on till just after noon, and we got to enjoy having Daddy home. The above photo is from Wednesday. If you look closely, the two red spots are robins, that were probably wishing they stayed south.
Thursday- another warm up that melted all the snow and ice, and filled up our sunshine tanks. ( i.e. made us cheerful)
Friday it started snowing around 10 AM. By nightfall, we had a foot of snow, with more coming down. Tops was asked to work Saturday, but couldn't get out of the driveway, so he stayed home.He went out to get wood for the stove, and stepped in drifts that were past his knees- he's 6 ft. tall, so these were big drifts! It stopped snowing Saturday night, and we have around 18 inches. Tops made it to church, but we decided the munchkins and I would stay home, since we didn't know how bad the roads would be. They were bad. Tops saw cars off the highway all over the place, some having been there for awhile, some having just gone off, and he saw a mini-van spin around on the opposite side of the highway.
The below photo is of the drifts along our porch, I can't say how deep these are, because I was standing barefoot in the doorway, and a little person was trying to sneak past his Mama to get out the front door and into all this great stuff, so I just snapped a quick one.

Its all supposed to melt again this week which is fine by me. I am so ready for spring. I will have to suffer the disappointment of no big birthday warm up this year. For the last- oh 4-5 years, it has warmed up to about 65-70+ degrees on my birthday, but this year, its only supposed to be about 50. O well, I'll take what I can get.

Yeah, "only 50", how terrible! ;) I am soooo sick of this snow and winter and ice and cold. Go away! Our church canceled services yesterday morning, so we were snowed in. Got nothing done all weekend - YAY! :)

Oh, but it looks so pretty! I know ... it must feel different there housebound with two kiddos, while I'm here in my cotton shirt and trousers and my husband and son are in the pool! Take heart -- spring will come eventually!
