I, am not a big fan of popcorn. I remember liking it as a kid, we had a hot air popper. When that broke, we went to microwave, which, being a novelty, I loved. And then I got tired of it. And I could probably count the number of times I've eaten popcorn in the last 10 years on 2 hands.
(Unless of course its the cheesy kind- oh BUDDY I love that stuff. Please don't tell me whats in it.)
Anyway. My husband LOVES popcorn. My children LOVE popcorn. And I really don't like buying microwave popcorn because of all the garbage that's in it. I really didn't want a hot air popper, just because we have LOUSY storage space in our kitchen. (2 lazy susan cupboards, a really deep corner cupboard, which would be fine except that the shelves are really close together, and a cupboard with two slide out flimsy drawers. 5 other cabinets round it out, but none of them are conducive to large storage. There is a closet pantry, but that has wire shelves, that pull out of the drywall from anything heavier than a 5 lb. sack of flour.)
Sorry for the rant, now where was I? Oh yes, why I didn't want a hot air popper. Not enough space, and after 2 years of hemming and hawing, I finally bought a food processor, and I am not sure where that contraption is gonna go.( W*Marts least expensive brand, but I want to see how much I really like having it before I think about a better one.) Wow, I am all over the place this morning, get to the point already Bon.
Alright on with the story, hopefully no more bunny trail- I was at the bulk foods store Friday, saw a bag of purple popcorn and impulsively bought it. I remember reading that you can pop regular popcorn in the microwave in a brown paper lunch bag, so I decided to give it a go.
Til I got on line to find instructions, and someone had pointed out that most brown paper is recycled, and who knows what you would be releasing into your food by heating it in the microwave. I really don't want to risk this baby or any of my children's children having 3 legs and 5 eyeballs, so I scrapped that idea. So now what? I have a bag of corn and nowhere to pop it. Well, I suppose I could do it on the stove, but isn't the kinda hard, and not really worth it? Clamors of "MOMMY! WE'RE HUNGRY!" decided it for me. On the stove it would be.
And you know what? Once the oil is heated in the pot, it takes less than a minute to pop 2 quarts worth (about 1/3 c. unpopped). And its GOOD. Beats microwave hands down any day, and didn't require a fancy machine I have no room for.

Hi Bonnie! I started making popcorn like this in Mozambique. It really is quick and easy (I always thought it would be so much work) and I think it is so much better than the airpopped kind. It is much crispier (or crunchier?). I like it popped in a little oil, and then when it is finished sprinkle on some salt, replace the lid, and shake really hard to mix in the salt...mmm ... delicious:-) Hey, also Bonnie, I forget where but somewhere on the internet you can get instructions for making kettle corn. It is so good, and stays crisp for a long time even after cooled. Basically it is that you heat the oil with 2 kernels in it. When they pop the oil is hot enough and you add sugar (this is where I can't remember how much) and rest of kernels and shake the whole time. When all the corn is popped you turn off the stove, add the salt and shake. Have fun!
You are funny! Do you talk like this is real life? I love people who digress (I'm a bit of one of those) -- it takes ages to get to the point, but you discover so many more interesting things along the way.
Morning: Yes. Sometimes I wonder if I'll ever get to my point!
