Jam Session

This is my "Canning Music" playlist

A first: I had ONE read that ONE jar of jam left. That has NEVER happened before since we've been married. I slogged through a muddy strawberry field Tuesday, Sprout in the backpack, and picked my 16 quarts, dumped a basket of them, picked them up, slipped in the mud after picking up the dumped berries (with Sprout still on my back),and didn't want to look at them until yesterday. Actually, they still hadn't regained any of their allure, (I am SORE from all of that squatting, kneeling, crawling and slipping with almost 30 pounds of baby on my back) but I put my nose to the grindstone and finally crawled into bed at 1 AM, 21 half pints of jam cooling on the table and 2 cookies sheets of berries freezing their little seeds off in the freezer. Babies- particularly *mine* make everything take 2-3 times as long. Or longer.

Last years list:

Canned:
Strawberry Jam 12 h. pts.
Spiced Strawberry Jam 10 h. pts.
Red Raspberry Jam 8 h. pts.
Blackberry Preserves 8 h. pts.
Cream of Mushroom Soup base 5 pts.
Spiced Peach Jam 7 h. pts., 1 .25 pt.
Blueberry Lime Jam 6 h. pts. (done by Honey)
Pizza Sauce 20 pts.
Spaghetti Sauce 8 qts.
Applesauce 9 qts. 1 pt.
Venison 22 qts.

Frozen:
3 qts. wild blackberries
1 1/2 gal. strawberries
1 1/2 qt. raspberries
25 qts. green beans
3 and 1/2 sliced zucchini/squash (experimenting)
9 c. diced green peppers
2 1/2 c. pesto
1 deer

Dried:
Basil
Chives
Parsley
1 and 1/2 zucchini/squash
Tomatoes- 1 pint jar

Didn't I just put all of this stuff away?

Yes you did! And here we go again- ready or NOT!

(I wonder which category I fall into....)

I don't know if I am going to get any strawberry picking done this year. I hope to-but I just don't know with all the rain and all the activities going on. We shall see. But I will say this: while there is nothing quite like strawberry freezer jam, I can't help but think the store stuff is pretty good too.

Heyyy! I recognize that cutting board! :-)
I actually have a LOT of jam to make this week. Your post is spurring me on. I'm trying to empty the chest freezer to move, problem is, there's about 14 gallon bags of berries in it! Annddd, I've just gotten word that the HUGE (like 4 acre) patch of wild blackberries by a friend's house are indeed ripe. How do you pass up free berries??!!
Yep, deeming a day for canning is a sure-fire way to have extra clingy/fussy/no napping/fighting children.
And, I wanna see pictures of the chickens!!!

Rebecca- Wow. If you're saying that about store bought jam, you must be busy! I have know idea what a good price is, but I paid $14 for 8 qts U-pick. Twice that for already picked.

Elisha- you DON"T pass up free berries! What about canning pie filling? B.'s mom canned blackberry pie filling last year from a recipe she found on the 'net and it was GOOD. Chicken picture on FB soon. Probably. Maybe. They're really pretty, Rhode Island red coloring with green tails! They learned real fast that seeing the kids mean treats and (and we've had them all of 24 hours) and run to the fence when they see them coming!

Oh yes, and the cutting board. Ahem. It's taken me all these years to finally work up the nerve to use it it's so pretty! I've been using it as art basically. This was the inaugural project and I must say, well made! And thank-you! (again)

oooohhh! Pie filling!!! Good idea! I didn't think of that! I'm going to have to look around for some recipes. Do you know off-hand which one V. used?
Yay! You better get to cuttin' on that thing! ;-)

I don't know, I think she just googled "canning blackberry pie filling recipe" and looked for comments and ratings on how it turned out.
